REGULATIONS AND CALL
VII INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL PLANET ON
September 28th to October 8th | 2023
DESCRIPTION
Colombia becomes the stage for discussing current environmental issues. To achieve this, Planet On proposes a dialogue between filmmakers, science, industry, and the public through cinematographic works, a short film competition that seeks to be the necessary space where people can narrate, from their perspective, the different environmental challenges that humanity faces.
Planet On aims to find the best stories about illegal wildlife trade and the protection of fauna in Latin America, as well as any other environmental issue that participants wish to address.
The VII edition of the International Environmental Film Festival, Planet On, will be the ideal place where we will gather to reflect on the impact these problems have on our lives and, of course, to celebrate the best audiovisual works.
The Festival considers the creativity and free expression of artists as fundamental elements to understand reality. For this reason, Planet On will have as conditions for the participating works in different categories, the relevance, quality, and environmental and cinematographic significance.
The call will be open for national and international short films.

AWARDS
PLANET ON will schedule the winning short films as part of the Official Selection 2023.
Award Conditions
I. The winner of the category must be the rights holder to receive the award.
II. Each winner will be selected by a jury chosen by Planet On.
III. The short films must have the necessary musical, image, and other rights.
IV. If the chosen winner does not meet the requirements stated here and others deemed necessary by the committee and jury, the award may be declared vacant.
Categories Description
The short film selection will be open to works produced between 2020 and 2023 with a maximum duration of 5 minutes, excluding end credits. The main theme should be the illegal wildlife trade or any other environmental issue, presented in a free narrative style. The selection will consist of one (1) Fiction short film and one (1) Non-Fiction short film shot in Latin America.
1. Fiction
Fiction: This category will gather works that reflect an imaginary context or situation created by the short film authors. While they may reference specific aspects of the real world, this category allows authors to determine and play with the rules of reality. It encompasses storytelling with invented characters, imagining utopian or ideal worlds, or even portraying reality from an unusual perspective, such as an animal or a biome.
Sub-genres like fable, drama, novel, experimental, comedy, among others, will have their place here. Ultimately, this category will offer participants many creative liberties and ample space for imagination.
To participate in this category, short films must be a maximum of 5 minutes in duration, excluding end credits. The works should address the illegal wildlife trade or a specific environmental theme, either exposing the problem or proposing solutions to environmental issues (e.g., biodiversity, climate change, endangered species, deforestation, pollution, among others).
The narrative and concept of the short film will be of greater relevance during the evaluation, compared to technical aspects such as sound and aesthetics. Nevertheless, the works must meet minimum quality requirements concerning technical and visual aspects.
2. Non-Fiction: This category will gather works that represent specific aspects of the real world. Here, the opportunity arises to reflect reality, concrete facts, or real stories, with the experience (and participation, if desired) of the real protagonists.
Sub-genres like documentary, essay, biography, chronicle, report, ethnography, among others, will be welcomed in this category. It allows a vivid depiction of both individual and community experiences, using interviews, figures, and verifiable data that give weight to the narrative.

The categories aim to stimulate and promote audiovisual proposals from individuals without defined prior experience. Students, enthusiasts, and industry professionals are welcome to participate. The only essential condition is that the story must address the problem and/or propose a solution to the illegal wildlife trade or any other environmental issue.
All techniques (animation, stop-motion, experimental narratives) are welcome and eligible for participation.

xii. If, after the call is closed, the committee considers that the registered titles do not meet its expectations, it may freely invite films or audiovisual pieces to be part of the different sections and special programs, even if they have not been registered through the Festhome platform.
xiii. In exceptional cases, given the relevance of the films, the committee may invite titles produced before 2019 and 2022 to participate in the selected screenings.
xiv. Whoever submits a film for consideration by the Planet On curatorial committee must be the rights holder or have express authorization for the film to be exhibited at the festival if selected. Otherwise, Planet On will be indemnified against third-party claims.
SPECIFIC CONDITIONS
In the sections proposed on this platform for Planet On 2023, all short films can be made from real images or any form of animation and will have absolute freedom regarding perspectives and forms, as long as they have an environmental focus.

The selection of Short Films will be open for films produced between 2020 and 2023 wit a duration of 5 minutes to 15 minutes. The pieces must have as a main theme the environment, exposed in a free narrative.
The selection will have 10 to 20 shorts made by Colombian directors or producers, filmed in Colombia or other countries.
The short films may participate in the following categories:
1. University Students: this category aims to stimulate and promote new proposals of undergraduate students who are studying in cinematography, creative industries or visual arts; who will be able to contribute new points of view to the open discussion on environmental issues.
To participate in this category it is necessary that the shorts have between 1 and maximum 5 minutes long. The works must address a particular environmental issue, either exposing the problem or proposing solutions to any of the problems.
In this category, undergraduate students of any program related to visual arts and cinematography can participate. Students must be linked to a Colombian university.
The expected products must meet the minimum quality according to the technical and visual aspects of composition such as: production, postproduction and sound. The curator committee will analyze aspects such as lighting and color. Overexposed products will not be admitted.
2. Amateur: this category seeks to provide opportunities to those who do not have the professional or technical knowledge of film production, but who from a digital perspective are able to represent and create narratives in relation to environmental issues.
The main purpose is to open spaces for biologists, ecologists, scientists and others to consider the visual arts as an expression to publicize a particular problem or to bring the public closer to the natural world.
Due to the possible lack of experience of the contestants, the requirements will be more flexible in terms of the categories mentioned above. In this sense, it will be the narrative and the concept of the short film that will have greater relevance in comparison with the technical aspects such as sound and aesthetics.
