DocsBarcelona International Documentary Film Festival is a festival specialized in the documentary genre, consisting of competitive international sections, non-competitive sections and master classes. All of the films that make up the different sections will be selected by an international programmers committee.

The 26th edition will take place from May 19th to 28th of 2023 and will be at the same time presential and online.

The following rules regulate the nomination of films for the Panorama and Latitud.

The Panorama Section brings together a selection of the best documentaries from the most recent international scene. The films in this section compete for the DocsBarcelona Award for Best Film with a financial endowment of € 5,000 and a festival award, and the New Talent Award for Best Film for debutant directors, which consists of a statuette.

The Latitud Section is a competitive section that brings together a selection of the best documentaries from the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. The DocsBarcelona Latitud Award is sponsored by Antaviana Films and consists of € 3,000 in post-production work (finishing, shaping, color correction, sound, DCP copies) of the director's next work and a festival award. The prize will be valid for the next 2 years after it has been awarded.

The DocsBarcelona – Moritz Audience Award will be given to the film best rated by the public votes in the Official Sections (Panorama and Latitude). Sponsored by Moritz, it consists of an economic endowment of 1500 € and a statuette. Awarded by the audience.

For those films whose theme is involved in defending the rights proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, freedom of expression and the values shared by Amnesty International, they are also eligible for the Amnesty Internationl Catalonia Award, awarded by the same organization and consists of an statuette.

The DOC-U Award will be given to the best film in this section. Awarded by the DOC-U Jury, it consists of € 1,000 in rental of rental film equipment for the winning director (s). Sponsored by 16nou.

The Reteena Young Jury Award will be given to the best film on the Reteena itinerary by the Reteena jury, which is made up of young people between the ages of 16 and 21. It consists of a statuette.


1. General requirements for registration

Deadlines:

Registration deadline: December 12th, 2022.
Confirmation: Selected documentaries will be reported before March 24th, 2023

1.1 Documentaries participating in the Panorama and Latitude will be selected by the Festival programmers. His decision is final.

1.2 DocsBarcelona will inform via e-mail only the candidates of the selected films, who must send the duly completed and signed entry form to formalize their participation in the Festival. In case of not being selected, the participants will receive a notification by mail through Festhome to the email of the person who has registered.

Admission criteria:

1.3 The Panorama Section is open to films from any country in the world.

1.4 The Latitud DocsBarcelona Section is open to films whose production country or the director's nationality is one of the following: Spain, Portugal and Latin American countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador). Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Venezuela).


1.5 The films presented must meet the following conditions:

- that due to their content they can be considered documentaries
- that its subject fits in the section where it is programmed
- which are produced after January 2021
- have a minimum duration of 40 minutes
- which have not been released commercially in Spain
- that have not been broadcast by any VOD platform in Spain
- which have not been broadcast on television in Spain
- who have not participated in film festivals in the city of Barcelona

The Festival management reserves the right to screen, as an exception, films that do not meet these requirements.

1.6 The only valid procedure for submitting a film to the Festival is through registration on the platform www.festhome.com. Submissions of DVDs or other physical and / or digital formats outside of Festhome will not be accepted.

1.7 Documentaries must be submitted in their original version and must have english subtitles when this is not the original language of the film.

1.8 Acceptance the exhibitions format:
The 26th edition of the DocsBarcelona Festival will be face-to-face and online. The format of the exhibition will be negotiated with each film.

1.9 Acceptance of private video library:
At the same time, the selected films will agree to be included in a private video library that will only be available to accredited people up to 10 months later, once the festival is over.

Documentaries that do not meet these requirements will not be considered.

2. Awards

2.1 None of the awards may be declared void or ex-aequo.

2.2 DocsBarcelona reserves the right to incorporate new awards and to replace the awards with others of equal or greater value if there is a justified cause. In any case, this decision will always be duly communicated. Prizes are not exchangeable for any other prize.

2.3 Cash prizes are subject to current personal income tax legislation for Spanish productions and on the basis of international double taxation agreements for foreign films.

2.4 All decisions taken by the Festival and the jury are final. The registration and participation of documentaries implies full acceptance of the rules. Any doubts that may arise that are not resolved herein will be resolved by the management of the organization of the Festival.

3. How to register a film

The only accepted procedure for submitting a film to the Festival is through the www.festhome.com platform.

3.1 Registration on the FestHome platform, which includes a technical file, promotional materials and an online link. The participant must ensure that the password on Youtube, Vimeo or others does not expire or change until the end of the Festival.

3.2 The registration fee * for the Festival is € 10 (VAT included) to cover the processing and viewing of the film. Registration fees are non-refundable.
* Exemption: films that have participated in the Festival’s Industry activities in previous editions (Speed Meetings, Pitchings, Rough Cut Screenings or Campus) of DocsBarcelona, are free of the Festival registration fee.
To enjoy this exemption, please send an email to films@docsbarcelona.com before registration indicating the edition and activity where the project was presented.

3.3 The Festival accepts the registration of films with non-definitive montages (rough cuts / non-definitive version) for the programmers to consider. At the time of registration, you must clearly notify / leave written that this is a non-final edition of the film. DocsBarcelona will contact directly the participant and / or person who has registered to claim a final and / or final version of the film if necessary.

3.4 The participant ensures that the film submitted is original and unpublished and is not subject to contracts, assignments or licenses to third parties of copyright or intellectual property or other rights, except the author’s own.

3.5 Only registrations that arrive on time will be accepted and incomplete applications will not be considered.

3.6 In the event that an invoice is required for registration, the tax details (including NIF / company identification number) and the title of the registered document must be sent, within a maximum period of 30 days from the registration of the film to: molivella@parallel40.com

4. Selection process, necessary requirements and authorizations:

Selection process:
Festival programmers will watch all the documentaries registered in the different competitive sections Panorama and Latitude.

The Festival will inform the candidates of the selected films before March 24th, who will receive the participation form (Entry Form) and the regulations of the Festival.

DocsBarcelona has no obligation to inform participants of the reasons for the selection of the films submitted.

Formats:
Selected movies must have a projection copy available in the following formats: DCP, .MP4, .MOV or Blu-ray. The Festival will not accept copies that do not meet the minimum exhibition conditions.
