The International Short Film Week Regensburg was founded in 1994 by the Arbeitskreis Film Regensburg e.V. (AKF e.V.) as a non-profit festival and has been held annually ever since.
What began as a small experiment has grown into an integral part of Regensburg’s cultural scene. Since March 2013, the festival has officially operated under the name International Short Film Week Regensburg.
At no fewer than four venues across Regensburg, the festival celebrates the short film format.
In addition, throughout the year the festival maintains a regional, national, and international presence through collaborations with partner festivals, supporters, and sponsors.
Four competitions form the heart of the festival, and the several thousand submissions received each year testify to the international relevance the festival has built over time.
Alongside the competitions for contemporary productions, the festival also presents a high-quality special programme featuring thematic and country-specific focuses as well as retrospectives. Some of these screenings are curated and presented by renowned guest curators, who also engage with audiences through discussions and contextual presentations.
Workshops, musical contributions, and art exhibitions further distinguish the festival from the wide range of cultural offerings and attract both interested audiences and industry professionals to the cathedral city alike.
Another important component of the festival is its programme of screenings for children and schools, accompanied by media education initiatives. These activities help preserve film as an art form while also encouraging critical and informed engagement with media in everyday life.
