The Wayuu Film and Video Show was born in 2008 as an initiative of young filmmakers worried about not having spaces for dissemination and exhibition of their work in La Guajira.

Alliances are quickly made between the Wayuu Women's Force Organization and the Jain Wain’juin Audiovisual Foundation (Venezuela).

The young filmmakers David Hernández Palmar, Miguel Iván Ramírez and Leiqui Uriana, with great interest and enthusiasm, show their first cycle of Wayuu cinema on the improvised screens of a wall of the town of Uribia, beginning the Wayuu Culture Festival First cycle of the Wayuu Film and Video Exhibition. Thus, this space was born to promote an exchange where communities, spectators and the general public could contribute critically to the achievements, as well as helping to recognize in us as Wayuu the possibility of telling our own stories.

In 2024, the Wayuu Film and Video Showcase celebrates its fourteenth edition, focusing on the climate crisis and climate justice from the perspective of the Wayuu people. This year, the Exhibition will take place in communities in border areas, promoting the direct participation of Wayuu communities. The exhibition seeks to raise awareness through film and video, promoting dialogue and action towards a more sustainable future, in the face of the environmental challenges we face.

In this version, it is in memory of our sister Jakeline Romero Epieyu, a woman who wove every stitch of life defending water and territory.
Our theme this year: The climate crisis represents one of the greatest threats and emergencies of the 21st century, characterized by increasing temperatures and extreme weather patterns. In La Guajira, this crisis is exacerbated by mining and energy exploitation, waste pollution and a lack of awareness about climate change. The situation is even more critical due to the semi-desert nature of the territory and its marginalization in decision-making spaces.

The Wayuu 2024 Film and Video Show aims to raise awareness about the impacts that the territory is experiencing in the face of the climate crisis and promote concrete actions to mitigate it. We seek to exhibit productions that offer experiences and visions about this crisis, and that promote the search for creative and sustainable solutions respecting the cultural particularities and needs of the Wayuu people.

MUCIWA is not just about exhibiting films, but about creating a meaningful space where the Wayuu community and other communities can approach film production. Our objective is to strengthen and build our own audiovisual language that responds to our needs and perspectives.

The exhibition will take place in border communities and will project works made by both Wayuu and non-indigenous creators, thus returning images and sounds to the communities. The screenings will be held in the Ma'liichen community, Paraguaipoa and nearby communities, in collaboration with allied organizations in the communications network of the Wayuu People.

Important Dates:

- Reception of Works: From August 15 to October 15, 2024

- Registration: Fill out the registration form available at registration. Send your audiovisual works along with promotional material (trailers, posters) through digital platforms such as Vimeo or WeTransfer, including the necessary access codes.

The organizing committee will select the works at its discretion and will notify participants by email.

We invite all creators to participate in this special edition of MUCIWA, where collaboration between Wayuu and Colombian Caribbean filmmakers is celebrated, enriching audiovisual production with diversity and talent. We look forward to receiving your proposals!
