The FilmGugger FilmFanFestival of the Palatinate is an annual short film festival held in Neustadt an der Weinstraße. With a different theme each year, the festival explores socially relevant topics and promotes democratic discourse through the power of film. The FilmGugger concept is a journey through film history. For three days, contemporary short films meet legendary classics, creating a unique dialogue between history and the future, between tradition and innovation. Three days of film festival as a time machine between yesterday and today, from October 29th to 31st, 2026, at the Roxy Cinema in Neustadt/Weinstraße.
Each year we dedicate ourselves to a different theme – in 2026, we celebrate the parallels between the Roaring Twenties (1920s) and today's world: technological revolution, political tensions, and social change.
A century after the Weimar Republic, we once again stand at a turning point in history. The parallels are striking: artistic free spirit, spectacular filmmaking, technological revolutions, intoxication, political turmoil, social change, radicalization, and the decline of Germany's first democracy. Just as sound film once revolutionized cinema, artificial intelligence is now transforming the medium. The FilmGugger Film Festival brings these two eras together. In two sections each, contemporary short films are presented alongside a classic film – from silent films to current video films, from F.W. Murnau and G.W. Pabst to Lotte Reiniger's early animated films. The short films cover all genres: drama, thriller, fantasy, comedy, documentary, animation, and experimental film. The focus is on short films that explore themes such as the understanding of democracy, social change, or the festival's motto.
The festival's philosophy:
We believe in the power of short films. Short films precisely capture complex themes in just a few minutes. And we believe in the power of community. In the age of YouTube and algorithms, film festivals in cinemas are needed more than ever.
Regarding our film selection:
For us, it's not technical perfection that counts, but courage. We show films that dare to be different, that have a unique style, that stay with us. Young in spirit, open in form, powerful in expression.
