Expanded Frames is an interdisciplinary Film and Exhibition Festival that explores the evolving relationship between moving and still images. Bringing together short films, photography, and painting, the project examines how the concept of the frame operates across different artistic practices.

In cinema, the frame contains movement, duration, and narrative, while in photography and painting it traditionally defines the boundaries of the image. Expanded Frames invites filmmakers, artists and audiences to reconsider these distinctions, exploring how images can exceed their physical and conceptual limits.

Through screenings, exhibitions, and public dialogue, the project creates a space for exchange between filmmakers, visual artists, and audiences. By placing different image-making practices in conversation, Expanded Frames investigates new ways of seeing, experiencing, and understanding contemporary visual culture.

Presented by téchne e.V., the project highlights emerging FLINTA* voices working across film and visual art, fostering experimentation, diversity, and interdisciplinary collaboration within Berlin's cultural landscape.

Screening Fee Shorts: 15€

Emerging Voice Award

Presented to a filmmaker whose work demonstrates a distinctive artistic vision and contributes new perspectives to contemporary moving-image practices.

Expanded Frame Award

Presented to a filmmaker whose work most compellingly expands the boundaries of the image through innovative approaches to storytelling, perception, and visual language.

Eligibility

The open call is open to FLINTA* filmmakers based in Berlin.

Applicants must be currently living and/or working in Berlin.

Individual filmmakers, artist-filmmakers, collectives, and collaborative projects are welcome to apply.

Emerging filmmakers at any stage of their career are encouraged to submit.

Film Requirements

Maximum duration: 20 minutes

Films must have been completed within the last five years.

Multiple submissions are permitted.

Films in languages other than English must include English subtitles.

Applicants must hold the necessary rights for all submitted material.
