Folk horror is a subgenre of horror film that is characterized by the use of elements of folklore to instigate fear and foreboding. Typical elements of the subgenre include rural settings, isolation and themes of superstition, religion, paganism, human sacrifice and the dark aspects of nature. Although related to supernatural horror cinema, folk horror generally focuses on people's beliefs and actions rather than the supernatural, and often involves naive outsiders confronting them.
