MARATEALE, chaired by Antonella Caramia and directed by Nicola Timpone, was founded within the Mediterranean Cinema Association, created in 2014, which has always promoted, organized and produced events related to culture, cinema, sustainability, environmental issues, and the rich territory of Basilicata.
Cinema, audiovisual and education are at the heart of the activities of MARATEALE which offers a program full of events, national and international guests who interact with the public, young people and professionals. A week of programming with previews, events, masterclasses and meetings with the authors to deepen the many themes that run through a film, a character, an idea.
MARATEALE is not only a Festival, but much more. During the editions it has become an important reference for young film lovers, for artists and professionals of cinema and audiovisual, with a particular attention to the authors of Basilicata. But it has also become networking for producers and professionals who during the event explore and share ideas and opinions, creating real "industry days".
The section MARATEALE IN GREEN will award the prize Champion of Sea and Earth (For commitment to the environment and sustainability).
MARATEALE IN SHORT – OFFICIAL REGULATIONS 2026
1. ORGANIZERS AND PROMOTERS
MARATEALE is a film festival organized by the Associazione Cinema Mediterraneo (https://www.marateale.com). The event will be held in the amphitheater of the prestigious Santavenere Hotel.
2. MARATEALE IN SHORT - ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
The “MARATEALE IN SHORT” competition is open to all fictional short films, both Italian and international, of any genre. All submitted works must be recent productions, completed no earlier than January 1, 2024, with a duration of less than 25 minutes, created on any format. The selection of the ten finalist short films is carried out by and at the sole discretion of the Jury and the Festival's Artistic Direction.
3. LOCATION – DATE
The MARATEALE IN SHORT competition is part of the MARATEALE event, which will take place in Maratea (Pz) starting from July 20, 2026.
4. JURY
The Festival Direction will appoint a Jury composed of prominent figures from the world of Cinema and Art.
5. LEGAL REPRESENTATIVE
The person submitting the film assumes full responsibility for being the legitimate authorized representative of all rights holders of the work. The declaration made by the individual signing the entry form exempts the Associazione Cinema Mediterraneo from verifying their legal standing to submit the film, which will be considered confirmed, thereby releasing the Association from any related liability.
6. SUBMISSION
Film registration for the MARATEALE IN SHORT section can be completed by downloading the entry form from https://www.marateale.com and sending it in Word format to maratealeinshort@gmail.com no later than June 10, 2026. It is mandatory that films sent via Vimeo link (or any other digital delivery method) include a password valid until July 31, 2026.
• Deadline: June 10, 2026.
• Method: The delivery method must be specified on the pre-selection form.
• Subtitles: Pre-selection films must be without subtitles if the original version is in Italian; films in any other language must include English or Italian subtitles.
• Entry Fee: €5.00 (five/00 Euros).
• IMPORTANT: Registration is only approved once the completed entry form and a copy of the bank transfer receipt have been sent to maratealeinshort@gmail.com.
7. SELECTED FILMS
Starting this year, the Short category will be divided into two subcategories:
• SHORT ITALY: 10 Italian fiction short films of any genre (the winner of the "Millennium Award" competition will automatically be included among the finalists).
• SHORT WORLD: 5 foreign fiction short films of any genre from all over the world.
The official selection will be announced by July 1, 2026. High-resolution promotional materials (photos, flyers, articles) must be sent via email by July 8, 2026.
8. AWARDS
The Artistic Director and the Jury will confer the following awards:
1. SHORT ITALY BEST FILM: MARATEALE AWARD and the RAI CINEMA CHANNEL AWARD. The latter, valued at €1,500.00, consists of a contract for the purchase of exclusive web and free-to-air TV rights for the Italian territory for 3 years by Rai Cinema. The film will gain visibility on www.raicinemachannel.it, partner sites, and, at Rai’s discretion, Rai channels. Delivery materials must be in MP4 HD and MXF formats.
2. SHORT WORLD BEST FILM: MARATEALE AWARD. Furthermore, both winning short films will be eligible to participate in the Voce Spettacolo 2027 Oscar Qualification Program, through promotion at the Lumiere Cinema in Beverly Hills, provided the short film meets all requirements set by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the 2027 Academy Awards.
9. HOSPITALITY
The organization will offer accommodation for a maximum of two people for the presentation of films selected for the MARATEALE IN SHORT competition. Priority will be given to directors and lead actors.
10. GENERAL RULES
Submission of works implies total and unconditional acceptance of these regulations. It also grants non-exclusive authorization to the festival organizers to broadcast and make available to the public—via their website or any other known means—short sequences of the works (max. 20 sec.) without compensation for the authors. The submission of promotional materials (stills, director photos, bio, filmography, synopsis, director's statement, posters) grants non-exclusive authorization to the organizers to use such information in the catalog, official website, and for promotional purposes. All award decisions are final.
All films will be covered by an "all risks" insurance policy (including loss or theft of the copy) while in the Festival's possession. In case of loss or damage, the Festival's liability is limited to the cost of reprinting the copy according to current Italian rates.
The Festival Management reserves the right to make decisions on matters not covered by these regulations. The Court of Lagonegro shall have jurisdiction over any disputes.
MARATEALE IN GREEN – OFFICIAL REGULATIONS 2026

Ten feature films focusing on environmental themes (animation, documentaries, fiction) will be selected to participate in the MARATEALE IN GREEN competition. All submitted works must be recent productions, completed no earlier than January 1, 2024.
• LOCATION – DATE: Marateale will take place in Maratea (Pz) from July 20 to July 25, 2026.
3. JURY

Award decisions are final. These regulations are drafted in Italian and English. In case of interpretative disputes, the Italian version shall prevail. The Festival Management reserves the right to decide on matters not covered by these regulations. The Court of Lagonegro shall have jurisdiction over any disputes.

Starting this year, Marateale is a partner of the Venusia Special Festival, organized by the Italian Association of People with Down Syndrome, which will take place in Venosa (Pz) on June 25, 26, and 27, 2026.
The competition is open to all fiction short films — both Italian and international — that address social themes, demonstrate strong civic engagement, and are capable of portraying the challenges of our time through an innovative and original cinematic language.
Film registration must be completed by downloading the entry form from the website and sending it in Word format to: venusiashortfestival@gmail.com , no later than June 10, 2026.
It is essential that the film submission, whether via Vimeo link or any other digital format, includes a password valid until July 31, 2026.
