During 5 days approx. 400 short films in over 100 screenings, approx. 800 film professionals attending and altogether approx. 30 000 visitors attending film screenings, industry programmes and events. The passion for short film joins everybody together in relaxed atmosphere.
One of the oldest and the biggest short film festivals in Europe. Academy Award®, Bafta and European Film Academy qualifying festival, recognised festival by International Federation of Film Producers Associations FIAPF and member of Short Film Conference ISFC.
The art of cinema is the starting point of everything at Tampere Film Festival. The festival’s mission is to make the world a better place one short film at a time and showcase artistically first-rate content.
The festival programme consists of competitions, special programmes and public and industry events. In addition to short films, the festival showcases feature-length documentaries, silent films, and, on occasion, also feature-length fiction films. The guiding principles in choosing programme content for the festival are the aesthetic, ethical, as well as the stylistic and narrative qualities of the films.
The festival is internationally renowned for its outstanding International and National Competitions. Each year, more than 7000 films are submitted, around 110 of these are selected and screened at the festival.
The International Competition is for short films only. The main prize consists of the Festival trophy “Kiss” and the 5000 € Grand Prix, in addition to which there are category prizes and special mentions. Tampere Film Festival is one of the Oscar®, BAFTA and EFA qualifying film festivals.
The National Competition showcases both short films (under 30 min) and feature-length documentaries. The main prize in both series is 5000 €, and in addition to these, there are other prizes and special mentions. The Tampere Film Festival National Competition is one of the most important platforms for Finnish filmmakers.
REGULATIONS – INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION 2024
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
▪ all genres (animation, fiction, documentary, experimental)
▪ maximum length 30 minutes
▪ completed 1 January 2022 or later
▪ completed productions only (working copies accepted ONLY if agreed with the festival before submitting)
▪ film can only be submitted once
▪ premiere not required
▪ accepted screening formats: DCP or Digital File (Apple ProRes 422 or H.264)
▪ screening copy must be in english or subtitled in english
▪ submitter is responsible for all copyrights
▪ by submitting the film, you commit to the film being screened if it is selected and the selection has been accepted by the filmmaker"
▪ no screening fee for selected films
▪ Early Bird deadline 31 August, submission fee 10 €/film
▪ Regular deadline 30 September, submission fee 12 €/film
▪ Final deadline 1 November, submission fee 14 €/film
SUBMISSION
▪ deadline 1 November 2023
▪ submissions can be made either via Festhome.com
▪ register to the site (if not done earlier)
▪ fill in the submission form carefully
▪ upload at least one still photo of the film (300 dpi)
▪ make sure the preview file is working correctly
▪ preview file must be in english or subtitled in english
▪ submit to Tampere Film Festival – International Competition 2024
▪ make the payment
▪ final selections are announced by the end of January 2024 on the festival’s website www.tamperefilmfestival.fi
▪ the submitters of the films will be notified prior to the public announcement
JURIES AND prizes
The festival will nominate an International Jury consisting of five members. The following prizes will be given to the film directors:
▪ Grand Prix: 5000 € and Festival Trophy “Kiss” for the best film in the competition
▪ three Category prizes; fiction, animation, documentary: each 1500 € and Festival Trophy “Kiss”
▪ EFA Tampere Candidate according to the regulations set by the European Film Academy
▪ Special Mentions
▪ Audience Award
In addition to the prizes mentioned above and with the approval of the festival, it is also possible for other organizations and associations to award films in the International Competition.
IF THE FILM IS SELECTED
▪ information given in the entry form (synopsis, credits etc.) will be used as such in marketing and publicity
▪ screening copy must be delivered at least two (2) weeks before the festival
▪ screening copy must have english subtitles
▪ films will be subtitled in Finnish
▪ festival is authorized to make one excerpt not exceeding 10% or max. three (3) minutes of the total running time of the selected films to be used in promoting the festival in various medias and online
▪ festival will insure the screening copy while in the festival’s possession (The insurance will adhere to the regulations of FIAPF)
▪ festival will cover the return expenses of the screening copy if needed
▪ festival will not pay screening fees for films selected into the competition
▪ festival will offer the representative of the film (one (1) person) accommodation in Tampere for three (3) nights during the festival
TFF online FILM FESTIVAL
The films selected into the International Competition will also be available online for online festival ticket holders, if agreed to by the filmmaker/submitter. The Tampere online Film Festival will be available via www.tamperefilmfestival.fi for a maximum of two (2) weeks during March 2024 and geoblocked to Finland only. Submitters are required to inform the festival of any possible restrictions regarding the online screenings at least two (2) weeks prior to the festival.
TFF online FILM LIBRARY
The films selected into the International Competition will automatically be entered into Tampere Film Festival’s online Film Library if agreed to by the filmmaker/submitter. The online Film Library will be available worldwide via www.tamperefilmfestival.fi for the festival's accredited professional guests only and will be open for one (1) month, March 2024. Submitters are required to inform the festival of any possible restrictions regarding the online Film Library at least two (2) weeks prior to the festival.
NON-SPECIFIED CASES
Any such cases not mentioned in these regulations will be left to the festival’s consideration (in accordance with FIAPF International Regulations). By submitting the entry form, the submitter acknowledges that they have read, understood and accepted the regulations without reservation.

→ series for over 30 minutes animation, documentary, fiction or experimental films. Fiction films can not be over 60 minutes in length.

However, please note that in such cases, the submitter(s)/filmmaker(s) are responsible for all translation fees.

Festhome holds accountable fees festivals by holding the payment of the fees of most newer festivals until they have viewed the submissions, held their festivals and other methods.
