The festival had its first edition in 2013 and has been organized annually since then by Associação Cultural Periferias in Portugal and Gato Pardo in Spain.

The project was born from a citizen initiative, supported by the municipality of Marvão from the beginning, and grew thanks to the support of diverse sponsors and collaborators.

Meanwhile, a new step was taken with the inclusion of Valencia de Alcântara (Spain) on the Festival map, thanks to the interest and involvement of the local government, Filmoteca de Extremadura and Diputación de Cáceres.

It is the intention of the organizers to contribute to an effective cultural decentralization.

We want to make accessible goods and services traditionally concentrated in big cities and which hardly reach rural populations.

EYESIGHT



We believe that it is possible, with this strategy, to locally implement a film culture that, in the medium term, allows for the creation of a more conscious audience endowed with a plural thinking that promotes contact with art, not only as a space for leisure, but as a critical thinking platform that reflects and interacts with today's world.

The organization of the festival, with all the activities and logistics involved, constitutes a significant boost to economic activity in the most diverse areas.

We offer an opportunity for the promotion and dissemination of local products and brands. We create conditions to attract tourism flows, especially tourism that is more committed to cultural and ecological aspects.

We contribute to the local, national and international dissemination of the brand and socio-cultural identity of the municipalities of Marvão and Valencia de Alcântara.

REGULATIONS

1. OBJECTIVES

1.1. Periferias – International Film Festival of Marvão and / Y Valencia de Alcántara aims to foster a local film culture that enables the creation of a more aware audience, endowed with plural thinking that promotes contact with art, not only as a space for leisure, but also as a platform for critical thought that reflects on and interacts with today’s world. The themes addressed in the films screened are: Human Rights, Environment, and Art & Culture.

1.2. As a unique event in Portugal, held on both sides of the border with Spain, it promotes film exhibition, discussion, and practice, while also contributing to effective cultural decentralization by bringing cinema to rural communities, with screenings in unexpected places, reaching different audiences.

1.3. The festival also aims to be an instrument for the cultural development of this border region, promoting locally, nationally, and internationally the brand and socio-cultural identity of the municipalities of Marvão and Valencia de Alcántara.

1.4. The festival is conceived by film lovers and professionals and aims to give visibility to different national productions in their various technical and thematic forms.

2. ADMISSION

2.1. The competitive sections and parallel showcases of Periferias – 14th International Film Festival of Marvão and / Y Valencia de Alcántara will take place in Marvão (Portugal) and Valencia de Alcántara (Spain), from August 7 to 15, 2025, and are open to national and international fiction and documentary films. The competition includes the categories of feature films, documentaries, and short films.

3. SUBMISSION AND SELECTION

3.1. Entries for the competition must be submitted online by May 31, 2026, at: Festhome: www.festhome.com

3.2. Periferias does not pay screening fees for films.

3.3. The official selection will be announced to all applicants by May 31, 2025, and will subsequently be published on the festival website and other communication channels.

3.4. Periferias will only notify selected films.

4. SUBTITLING

4.1. Submitted films that are not in Portuguese, Spanish, or English must be accompanied by a screening copy subtitled in one of these languages.

5. AWARDS

5.1. The following awards will be granted:

AWARD FOR BEST FEATURE FILM 2026, with the TAJO TEJO INTERNACIONAL BIOSPHERE RESERVE statuette, awarded to the work considered the best among all competing categories and themes.

AUDIENCE AWARD, granted to the work receiving the most votes from the audience.

Up to two honorable mentions may also be awarded.

6. JURY

6.1. The Jury will be composed of 3 distinguished personalities of recognized merit, invited by the organization, who will vote on all the works in competition.

6.2. The Jury may decide whether or not to award the prizes set out in these Regulations.

6.4. Persons with direct interests in the production and/or commercial exploitation of the films submitted to the competition may not be members of the Jury.

7. FINAL PROVISIONS

7.1. Periferias reserves the right to select some of the submitted films to be included in non-competitive parallel sessions and thematic showcases outside the competition, as part of the general program.

7.2. Each participant assumes full responsibility for the works submitted to the competition for all legal purposes, and Periferias shall bear no responsibility whatsoever towards third parties.

7.3. Periferias reserves the right to screen short excerpts of the awarded works, or others requested by the media, on television, in cinemas, and through other communication channels.

7.4. Periferias reserves the right to screen competing works in its showcases and outreach events, to be held within one year after the festival, in other locations in Portugal, on a non-profit basis and for educational purposes.

7.5. Participants must comply with these Regulations, accepting all of their clauses.

7.6. Decisions made by the organization regarding the interpretation and enforcement of these Regulations shall not be subject to appeal.

7.7. The competition results will be announced at the closing ceremony of the 14th International Film Festival of Marvão and / Y Valencia de Alcántara and through the Festival website and other media channels.

7.8. Any matters not provided for in these Regulations shall be resolved in accordance with the international rules governing Film Festivals.

REGLAMENTO

1. OBJETIVOS

1.1. El Periferias – Festival Internacional de Cine de Marvão y / Y Valencia de Alcántara tiene por objetivo implantar localmente una cultura cinematográfica que permita la creación de un público más consciente y dotado de un pensamiento plural que promueva el contacto con el arte, no solo como un espacio de ocio, sino como una plataforma de pensamiento crítico que refleje e interactúe con el mundo actual. Las temáticas abordadas en las películas exhibidas son: Derechos Humanos, Medio Ambiente y Arte y Cultura.

1.2. Siendo un evento singular en Portugal, realizado a ambos lados de la frontera con España, promueve la exhibición, el debate y la práctica cinematográfica, contribuyendo igualmente a una descentralización cultural efectiva, llevando el cine a las poblaciones rurales, con proyecciones en lugares improbables, al encuentro de los distintos públicos.

1.3. El festival pretende ser igualmente un instrumento de desarrollo cultural de esta región fronteriza, en la difusión local, nacional e internacional de la marca y la identidad sociocultural de los municipios de Marvão y Valencia de Alcántara.

1.4. El festival está ideado por amantes y profesionales del mundo cinematográfico y tiene como objetivo dar visibilidad a las diferentes producciones nacionales, en sus distintos registros técnicos y temáticos.

2. ADMISIÓN

2.1. Las secciones competitivas y las muestras paralelas del Periferias – 14.º Festival Internacional de Cine de Marvão y / Y Valencia de Alcántara se celebrarán en Marvão (Portugal) y Valencia de Alcántara (España), del 07 al 15 de agosto de 2025, y están abiertas a largometrajes y documentales nacionales y extranjeros. La competición contempla las categorías de largometrajes, documentales y cortometrajes.

3. INSCRIPCIÓN Y SELECCIÓN

3.1. La inscripción de las obras a concurso deberá realizarse online hasta el 31 de mayo de 2026 en: Festhome: www.festhome.com

3.2. Periferias no paga ninguna tasa por la exhibición de películas.

3.3. La selección oficial será anunciada a todos los candidatos hasta el 31 de mayo de 2025, siendo divulgada posteriormente en la web y en los demás canales de comunicación del festival.

3.4. Periferias únicamente notificará a las películas seleccionadas.

4. SUBTITULADO

4.1. Las películas inscritas que no estén en lengua portuguesa, española o inglesa deberán ir acompañadas de una copia de exhibición subtitulada en una de estas lenguas.

5. PREMIOS

5.1. Se otorgarán los siguientes premios:

PREMIO A LA MEJOR LARGOMETRAJE 2026, con la estatuilla TAJO TEJO INTERNACIONAL RESERVA DE LA BIOSFERA, otorgado a la obra considerada la mejor entre todas las categorías y temáticas en competición.

PREMIO DEL PÚBLICO, otorgado a la obra más votada por el público.

Podrán concederse hasta dos menciones honoríficas.

6. JURADO

6.1. El Jurado estará compuesto por 3 personalidades de reconocido mérito, invitadas por la organización, que votarán el conjunto de las obras en competición.

6.2. El Jurado podrá decidir otorgar, o no, los premios previstos en este Reglamento.

6.4. No podrán formar parte del Jurado personas que tengan intereses directos en la producción y/o explotación de las películas presentadas a concurso.

7. DISPOSICIONES FINALES

7.1. Periferias se reserva el derecho de seleccionar algunas de las películas inscritas para integrarlas en las sesiones paralelas no competitivas y en las muestras temáticas fuera de concurso, incluidas en la programación general.

7.2. Cada participante asume la plena responsabilidad por las obras que haya inscrito a concurso a todos los efectos legales, quedando excluida toda y cualquier responsabilidad de Periferias frente a terceros.

7.3. Periferias se reserva el derecho de exhibir en televisión, en salas de cine y en otros canales de comunicación pequeños fragmentos de las obras premiadas, u otras solicitadas por los medios de comunicación.

7.4. Periferias se reserva el derecho de exhibir las obras concursantes en sus muestras y extensiones, que se celebren en el plazo de un año tras la realización del festival, en otras localidades de Portugal, sin fines lucrativos y con fines pedagógicos.

7.5. Los concursantes deberán respetar el presente Reglamento, aceptando todas sus cláusulas.

7.6. Contra las decisiones de la organización en cuanto a la interpretación y cumplimiento de este Reglamento no cabrá recurso.

7.7. Los resultados del concurso se darán a conocer en la ceremonia de clausura del 14.º Festival Internacional de Cine de Marvão y / Y Valencia de Alcántara y a través de la web del Festival y de otros canales de comunicación social.

7.8. Todas las materias no previstas en el presente Reglamento serán resueltas de acuerdo con las normas internacionales de los Festivales de Cine.
