GIJÓN/XIXÓN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (FICX) aims to showcase a wide and varied selection of auteur cinema currently being produced worldwide and especially focused on innovative films and emerging filmmakers. High quality, personal, young in its shape, edgy and independent cinema at a creative level. During its selection process, the Festival will prioritise those works of interest that have their World, International, European or Spanish premiere at FICX as well as those that do not have commercial distribution agreements in the Spanish territory.
Acknowledged as “Specialized Festival” by the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Association)

The prizes awarded by the various FICX juries will be:
> INTERNATIONAL JURY OFFICIAL SECTION - ALBAR INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
An International Jury composed of prominent professionals from the film industry and the culture sector will award the following prizes:
- Prize for Best Feature Film, worth 30.000 € (1). Additionally, the Best Feature Film will receive a Distribution Prize, worth 10.000 € (2). The distribution company that receives this award acquires the commitment to release the film in commercial screens in Spain within twelve months from the closing date of the 64th FICX.
- ‘AISGE’ Award for Best Actress.
- ‘AISGE’ Award for Best Actor.
- Best Direction Award.
> FIPRESCI JURY OFFICIAL SECTION - RETUEYOS INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
A Jury from the International Federation of Film Critics – FIPRESCI, made up of three international film critics, will award the following prizes:
- FIPRESCI Award for Best Featue Film, worth 10.000 € (1).
- Special Jury Prize. This award will distinguish, for its excellence or extraordinary nature, one of the creative or technical aspects of one of the films in the Retueyos International Competition. The jury must state the reasons for the award.
> INTERNATIONAL JURY OFFICIAL SECTION – FICX PREMIERE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
An International Jury composed of prominent professionals from the film industry and the culture sector will award the following prizes:
- Prize for Best Feature Film, worth 10.000 € (1).
- Special Award for Artistic Contribution.
> INTERNATIONAL JURY OFFICIAL SECTION - SHORT FILM INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
An International Jury made up of prominent professionals from the film industry and the culture sector will award the following prize:
- PRINCIPADO DE ASTURIAS Prize for Best Short Film, worth 5.000 € (1).
This award entails pre-selection for the Oscar® Awards of the American Academy and the Goya® Awards of the Spanish Academy.
> ENFANTS TERRIBLES SECTION. BEST FEATURE FILM AWARD
The Award for Best Feature Film in the Enfants Terribles section will be decided by the vote of the children and young audiences of the different screenings for students programmed by the Gijón/Xixón International Film Festival. This prize is worth 5.000 € (1).
> YOUTH JURY
A Jury made up of young people, aged 17–25 will award the following prizes:
- Youth Jury Award for Best Feature Film of the Retueyos International Competition. Additionally, the film awarded by the Youth Jury will also receive a Distribution prize, worth 5.000 € (2). The distribution company that receives this award acquires the commitment to release the film in commercial screens in Spain within twelve months from the closing date of the 64th FICX.
- Youth Jury Award for Best Short Film of the Short Film International Competition.
> SPANISH CINEMA JURY
A cross-section competition comprising a selection of feature films of Spanish (co-)production and/or (co-)directed by Spanish filmmakers, produced after 1st January 2025 and which have not been commercially released in Spain prior to their first public screening at the 64th edition of the FICX.
A Jury composed of prominent professionals from the film Industry and the culture sector will decide the following prizes:
- Best Spanish Film Prize, worth 3.000 € (3). In the event that several directors appear on the film's entry form, the prize will be shared equally among them.
In addition, the company RCservice is offering a prize for the director of the winning film in this category, consisting of services and/or the hire of digital film camera equipment, to be used on their next project (service valued at €3,000). The director may transfer the prize to the production company of their new work (or expressly to their Director of Photography). The beneficiary person or company shall be free to choose the services of their interest among the range of RCservice digital film equipment available at the time of shooting their new project. The prize must be claimed within 12 months of the close of the 64th FICX. In the case of co-direction, the prize recipients must decide which project – either an individual project directed by one of the directors, or a project co-directed by at least one of the co-directors – will be the beneficiary.
- “DAMA” Award for Best Script, to one of the feature films competing within the category described above.
- “AMAE” Award for Best Editing, to one of the feature films competing within the category described above.
> LA NOCHE DEL CORTO ESPAÑOL JURY
A Jury made up of prominent professionals from the film industry and the culture sector will award the following prizes:
- Noche del Corto Español Award to the Best Short Film, worth 1.000 € (1).
- “FESTHOME” Distribution Award consisting of a distribution grant for the short film for 6 months, including entry fees for the festivals that are part of the platform for an approximate value of 3.500 €. The winning short film must include the FESTHOME logo in the opening credits, as well as in its promotional poster. The representative(s) of the winning project must contact the platform to receive instructions regarding the operation of the award. Both parties will coordinate a meeting to discuss the distribution plan defined by the winning project, and its correct execution in FESTHOME. In any case, the beneficiary project must communicate when to make use of the award before December 31st, 2027. The award does not include direct payment by FESTHOME to the winning short film.
> CIMA JURY
A cross-sectional competition comprising a selection of feature films within the 64th FICX programme and with a duration of no less than 45 minutes, directed or co-directed by women. A specific Jury, appointed by the Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media will award the following prize:
- XI CIMA Award for the Best Film directed by a woman, worth 2.000 € (3). In the event that several female filmmakers appear on the film's entry form, the prize will be shared equally among them.
> ASTURIAN CINEMA JURY
These awards, sponsored by RTPA, are the subject of a specific call for entries which can be consulted at www.ficx.tv
A jury made up of a representative from RTPA (Radiotelevisión del Principado de Asturias) and two professionals from the film industry or the culture sector, will award the following prizes:
- RTPA** Award for Best Asturian Feature Film. A cross-section competition for which a selection of Asturian* feature films that have been selected for the OFFICIAL SECTION, ENFANTS TERRIBLES, SPECIAL SCREENINGS, ESBILLA and/or GENERACIÓN MUTANTE sections of the 64th FICX are eligible.
- RTPA** Asturies Curtiumetraxes Award. A Prize for Best Short Film and a Special Mention will be awarded.
*Films will be considered as Asturian productions when they have been produced or directed by Asturias-born professionals or resident in the region.
**It will be compulsory for the winners in these categories to include the RTPA logo and the mention corresponding to their award in the film’s opening and/or closing credits, in accordance with the specific rules of this award.
- LABORAL CINEMATECA Short Film Distribution Award. Laboral Cinemateca will award this prize to one of the short films selected for the Asturies Curtiumetraxes Competition, consisting of the distribution of the winning short film at the most prominent film festivals and audiovisual events, both nationally and internationally. Furthermore, this short film will form part of the general database of Asturian short films, open to all filmmakers and producers in the Principality of Asturias.
> RAMBAL Award by Asociación XEGA
A Jury appointed by the LGTBI+XEGA Association will grant the "Rambal Award" in memory of Alberto Alonso Blanco (Rambal). This award may be given indistinctly to a leading figure in the audiovisual field, or to the production, artistic team or any other element of one of the films eligible for the award.
AUDIENCE AWARDS:
> GRAND AUDIENCE AWARD
A cross-sectional competition where a selection of feature films (no less than 45 minutes long) that are part of the 63rd FICX OFFICIAL SECTION, ENFANTS TERRIBLES, ESBILLA and/or GENERACIÓN MUTANTE sections are eligible. This award is worth 5.000 € (1) and it will be decided by the vote of the audience attending the screenings.
> TIERRES EN TRANCE AWARD
A cross-section competition comprising a selection of feature films of at least 45 minutes’ duration, Latin American (co-productions, produced after 1st January 2025 and which have not been publicly screened in Spain prior to their screening at the 64th edition of the FICX. This award is worth 3.000 € (3), to be received by the director of the film which, having met the above requirements, receives the highest score in the audience vote from among all the works in competition in the TIERRES EN TRANCE COMPETITION. In the event that the film’s entry form lists several directors, the prize will be divided equally amongst them.
> EUROPA FILM FESTIVALS (EFF) – YOUNG EUROPE AWARD
A cross-sectional competition comprising a selection of first, second or third feature films no less than 45 minutes long, which are European co-productions, according to the current criteria within the MEDIA Programme of Creative Europe. The Award is worth 3.000 € (3), to be awarded to the director of the film who, fulfilling the requirements previously described, receives the highest number of votes among all the other works competing for the GRAND AUDIENCE AWARD. In case that the film entry form includes several directors, the prize will be shared equally amongst them.
7.- ASSIGNATION OF THE PRIZES
(1) To be received by the person or company listed in section C of the participation commitment included in the official registration form.
(2) If the film winning the Best Feature Film award has been entered by a Spanish distribution company, both prizes may be awarded.
(3) To be received by the person listed in section B of the participation commitment included in the official registration form.
- None of the 64th FICX prizes may be declared deserted or awarded ex aequo.
- Cash prizes of the Official Section and Enfants Terribles are cumulative to the ones assigned to the cross-categories: Tierres en Trance, Grand Audience Award, Young Europe Award and Best Spanish Film Award. These cross-sectional prizes may be awarded to the same film.
- In all cases, withholding taxes and other expenses that may be incurred upon delivery of the cash prize will be deducted from them, so that the final amount will vary depending on the conditions set out by each country and how payment is made.
8.- It is compulsory and inexcusable for ALL THE FILMS THAT HAVE WON A CASH PRIZE within the different sections to mention the award received at Gijón/Xixón International Film Festival (FICX) in all the publicity and promotional graphic materials of the film, as well as in the credits of all the copies/prints released in Spain both for theatrical exhibition and home formats (DVD, BluRay, and/or VOD platforms).
9.- PARTICIPATION in the 64th Gijón International Film Festival implies acceptance of the Regulations. The interpretation of these will be at the sole discretion of the Festival’s Organising Committee but in accordance with International Regulations established by the FIAPF.
In case of doubt, only the Spanish version of these regulations will be considered valid.

1.- The FICX - GIJÓN/XIXÓN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL aims to bring together a wide and varied selection of auteur cinema produced around the world, with a particular focus on innovative projects and emerging filmmakers. Quality cinema that is personal and creative in form, and which embodies artistic risk and independence. In its selection process, the Festival will give priority to works of interest that are having their world, international, European or national premiere at the FICX, as well as those that do not have commercial distribution agreements in the Spanish territory.
2.- THE 64TH GIJÓN/XIXÓN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL will take place from 13 to 21 November 2026.
3.- MAIN SECTIONS OF THE 64TH EDITION:
A. OFFICIAL SECTION
The Official Selection of the Gijón/Xixón International Film Festival showcases, across its four categories, fiction, non-fiction and/or animation works, in a commitment to the quality and audacity of contemporary cinema that is outside the mainstream, with special emphasis on European and Latin American cinema, in which priority will be given to the discovery of young filmmaking talents, whose films will coexist with the latest works of acclaimed filmmakers.
- ALBAR INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
Official international competition made up of a carefully curated selection of outstanding works from the international independent and auteur film scene. The competition is open to films of no less than 45 minutes in length, produced after 1st January 2025, which would be making their Spanish premiere at FICX.
- RETUEYOS INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
Official international competition for works that explore new paths and/or with a cutting-edge approach, with a special focus on filmmakers with less than four feature films released to their credit. The competition is open to films of no less than 45 minutes in length, produced after 1st January 2025, which would be making their Spanish premiere at FICX.
- FICX PREMIERE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
Official international competition for works of singular cinematographic interest which would be making their Spanish premiere at FICX. The competition is open to films of any length, produced after 1st January 2025.
- COMPETICIÓN INTERNACIONAL CORTOMETRAJES
Official international competition comprising short films no more than 30 minutes long produced after 1st January 2025, which would be making their Spanish premiere at FICX.
B. ENFANTS TERRIBLES
Competitive section specifically aimed at the Festival's younger audience. Films produced after 1st January 2025 are eligible.
C. ESBILLA
Selection of films showcasing works from the international film industry scene that stand out for their quality and/or audacity, in addition to premieres of special formal or thematic value.
D. LA NOCHE DEL CORTO ESPAÑOL
Competition made up of a selection of short films (less than 30’) of Spanish (co)production and/or (co)directed by Spanish
filmmakers, produced after 1st January 2025.
E. ASTURIES CURTIUMETRAXES
A wide selection of short films made in Asturias and/or by Asturian producers or filmmakers, produced after 1st January 2025. The specific regulations for this section will be available at ficx.tv.
F. SPOTLIGHTS, RETROSPECTIVES, SEASONS, SPECIAL SCREENINGS
The Festival enriches its programme with the presentation of several SPOTLIGHTS and RETROSPECTIVES conceived to discover/reinforce the work of filmmakers on the national and international film industry scene. Likewise, FICX includes in its approach the presentation of SEASONS defined by a thematic line or by a geographical criterion, whose selection - as well as that of the SPOTLIGHTS and RETROSPECTIVES-, might be carried out through the curatorship and/or in collaboration with other festivals and institutions. The SPECIAL SCREENINGS will host the season's outstanding titles and/or screenings accompanied by special guests.
G. CROSSROADS - SSIFF / FICX
This section is made up of films selected jointly by the San Sebastian International Film Festival and FICX, accompanied by
presentations and Q&As with the audience, and in which the programme lines of both events converge.
H. GENERACIÓN MUTANTE
A selection of films of all times in which classic film genres are approached from a personal and/or heterodox artistic perspective.
4.- PARTICIPATION
The feature and short films opting for selection in both the competitive and out-of-competition sections must be submitted via the online platform FESTHOME following the requirements specified on the site. Registration must be made complying with the following deadlines:
1. Enfants Terribles Section: Before 21st August 2026.
2. Feature Films for all the other sections: Before 6th September 2026.
3. Short Films: Early bird, Before 6th September. Late entries, Before 13th September 2026, except for Asturies Curtiumetraxes competition (limited to Asturian filmmakers and/or producers), which will have its own deadlines and conditions, specified on the regulations that will be available on the Festival’s website.
No work made entirely by generative artificial intelligence will be accepted. However, generative AI may be used ad hoc for the development of the work as long as it is specifically and expressly mentioned. Failure to mention this will result in the non-acceptance of the work
5.- CONDITIONS FOR SELECTED FILMS
a) Once the film has been selected for participation and confirmed by its exhibition rights holder, it cannot be unilaterally withdrawn by those responsible nor can it be presented in Spain before its premiere in the Festival without the express permission of FICX.
b) Films that have confirmed their Spanish, European, International or World premiere at the 64th Gijón/Xixón International Film Festival are not allowed to compete in other (on-site and/or online) festivals located in Spanish territory whose starting dates are equal to or prior to the opening date of FICX.
c) The Festival will decide the date, time, venue, format (physical / online) and order of exhibition for each film. The Festival does not commit to communicate the final date, time, place and order of exhibition before November 2nd 2026.
d) FICX is committed not to screen each title more than five times during the Festival dates, according to FIAPF’s International regulations.
e) The selection of each title will be strictly confidential between the Festival team and the representatives of the invited films and must remain undisclosed until an official announcement is made by the Festival. In the event that a film that has confirmed its Spanish, European, International or World premiere at FICX is selected by other festivals located in Spain, the person or company holding the exhibition rights must ensure that it is not announced by any other festival before FICX does.
f) The Festival will provide insurance coverage for screening copies sent in physical format, from the time they are handed over to the carrier until they are returned to the participant. As stated in Article 10 of the FIAPF regulations, any claim regarding a copy must be filed within 30 calendar days of the date of return.
g) In the case of online screenings, the Festival will ensure that the VoD platform selected guarantees top quality services and that only recognised companies will be hired for the digital compression processes. It will also require the application of the necessary technical systems and protocols to guarantee the security of the streaming broadcast.
h) All films participating in competitive sections must submit the OFFICIAL REGISTRATION FORM. The data included in this form will be binding when assigning the destination of the cash prizes.
i) Delivery of materials and screening copies of the films:
- By October 12th 2026, the following materials must be sent: dossier including cast and crew, bio-filmography of the director(s), stills and photos of the film and the director(s), poster and excerpts of the film for promotion. Press kits as well as other marketing materials may also be submitted for distribution to the press.
- By October 12th 2026, the screening print/copy of the film must be sent, indicating clearly the film’s title, length, footage, format and value of the copy to:

- Screening DCPs should preferably be transferred digitally via the Festival's private server. The costs of sending them via another DCP transfer platform shall be covered by the participant.
- The participant shall provide the necessary KDMs for each of the servers at the venues where the film is to be screened, with the costs of generating these to be borne by the participant.
- Shipping costs, from the place of origin and return, of films participating in competition will be paid for by the entity and/or individual(s) registering the film for participation. The Festival will not cover any costs regarding the delivery of related materials (screeners, posters, photographs, etc.).
- The person or company that has registered the selected film will have to provide the Festival with the screening copy in the format(s) required by FICX in each case (DCP following DCI, digital file, 35mm, 16mm).
- All screening prints/copies will remain at the Festival until the end of the event. The prints/copies will be returned, after the Festival’s closing date, to the address stated on the related section of the submission form, unless the print’s owner indicates otherwise in written form before the film’s screening date at FICX.
- DCP screening copies must comply with DCI standards and, prior to being sent to the Festival, must be tested on an approved server by the company or individual who has entered the film, who must attach a written certificate confirming that the copy has been tested and is functioning correctly.
- All screening prints/copies must include subtitles in Spanish and or English.
6.- JURIES AND PRIZES

Laboral Cinemateca will award this prize to one of the short films selected for the Asturies Curtiumetraxes Competition, consisting of the distribution of the winning short film at the most prominent film festivals and audiovisual events, both nationally and internationally. Furthermore, this short film will form part of the general database of Asturian short films, open to all filmmakers and producers in the Principality of Asturias.
> RAMBAL Award by Asociación XEGA
A Jury appointed by the LGTBI+XEGA Association will grant the "Rambal Award" in memory of Alberto Alonso Blanco (Rambal). This award may be given indistinctly to a leading figure in the audiovisual field, or to the production, artistic team or any other element of one of the films eligible for the award.
AUDIENCE AWARDS:
> GRAND AUDIENCE AWARD
A cross-sectional competition where a selection of feature films (no less than 45 minutes long) that are part of the 63rd FICX OFFICIAL SECTION, ENFANTS TERRIBLES, ESBILLA and/or GENERACIÓN MUTANTE sections are eligible. This award is worth 5.000 € (1) and it will be decided by the vote of the audience attending the screenings.
> TIERRES EN TRANCE AWARD
A cross-section competition comprising a selection of feature films of at least 45 minutes’ duration, Latin American (co-productions, produced after 1st January 2025 and which have not been publicly screened in Spain prior to their screening at the 64th edition of the FICX. This award is worth 3.000 € (3), to be received by the director of the film which, having met the above requirements, receives the highest score in the audience vote from among all the works in competition in the TIERRES EN TRANCE COMPETITION. In the event that the film’s entry form lists several directors, the prize will be divided equally amongst them.
> EUROPA FILM FESTIVALS (EFF) – YOUNG EUROPE AWARD
A cross-sectional competition comprising a selection of first, second or third feature films no less than 45 minutes long, which are European co-productions, according to the current criteria within the MEDIA Programme of Creative Europe. The Award is worth 3.000 € (3), to be awarded to the director of the film who, fulfilling the requirements previously described, receives the highest number of votes among all the other works competing for the GRAND AUDIENCE AWARD. In case that the film entry form includes several directors, the prize will be shared equally amongst them.
7.- ASSIGNATION OF THE PRIZES
(1) To be received by the person or company listed in section C of the participation commitment included in the official registration form.
(2) If the film winning the Best Feature Film award has been entered by a Spanish distribution company, both prizes may be awarded.
(3) To be received by the person listed in section B of the participation commitment included in the official registration form.
- None of the 64th FICX prizes may be declared deserted or awarded ex aequo.
- Cash prizes of the Official Section and Enfants Terribles are cumulative to the ones assigned to the cross-categories: Tierres en Trance, Grand Audience Award, Young Europe Award and Best Spanish Film Award. These cross-sectional prizes may be awarded to the same film.
- In all cases, withholding taxes and other expenses that may be incurred upon delivery of the cash prize will be deducted from them, so that the final amount will vary depending on the conditions set out by each country and how payment is made.
8.- It is compulsory and inexcusable for ALL THE FILMS THAT HAVE WON A CASH PRIZE within the different sections to mention the award received at Gijón/Xixón International Film Festival (FICX) in all the publicity and promotional graphic materials of the film, as well as in the credits of all the copies/prints released in Spain both for theatrical exhibition and home formats (DVD, BluRay, and/or VOD platforms).
9.- PARTICIPATION in the 64th Gijón International Film Festival implies acceptance of the Regulations. The interpretation of these will be at the sole discretion of the Festival’s Organising Committee but in accordance with International Regulations established by the FIAPF. In case of doubt, only the Spanish version of these regulations will be considered valid.
