The LICHTER Film Festival Frankfurt International is a celebration of and for film. Carried by a high-quality regional as well as international programme, it shines a light on the facets of film art that too often miss out in the everyday of cinema and television.

LICHTER was born from the local film scene. Founded in 2008 by a group of filmmakers and film fans, it has developed from an event for a few from a pledged community in a homemade cinema housed in a studio to an integral part of the (supra-)regional culture. The success proves the creators right. In 2017, LICHTER celebrated its 10th anniversary and proved once more how big the region’s need is to bring them, the audience, the creatives and guests from all over the world together.

The festival programme doesn’t just want to entertain. Every year, the curators make efforts in combining cinema and discourse. In addition to the regional short- and long film competitions, which give a space to the diverse filmmaking of the region, the international programme focuses on a theme that changes yearly. This theme captivates for more reasons than just its topicality, it also points toward socio-political questions to follow and continue debates outside of the film theatre. LICHTER already took on the themes “City”, “Revolution”, “Humour”, “Money”, “Truth”, “Chaos” and “Nature”. This year, the 13th edition of the festival revolves all around “Power”.

At the Intersection of Film and Other Artistic Disciplines
Following this, it seems even more important to search for and support intersections with other cultural institutions and artistic disciplines. The bridge between film, artistic means of expression and social dialogue makes LICHTER unique within German film festivals. Notable partners like the German Film museum or our partner cinema Mal Seh’n are not just venues, institutions such as the Cluster of Excellence Normative Orders of the Goethe University especially add to the content-related design of the extensive accompanying programme: In numerous workshops and discussions, we question the socio-political explosive force of the yearly theme in a number of different ways. Meanwhile, the LICHTER ART AWARD, launched in 2010, focuses closely on the field of video art and its current developments and directions on regional and international levels, while last-but-not-least the VR Storytelling Competition, first launched in 2017, dedicates itself to the varieties of alternative realities.

Mirror Mountain Film Festival brings the best in independent and alternative cinema to Canada’s capital. Mirror Mountain is an inclusive festival that welcomes all types of films and all types of people to share in the collective cinema experience. In addition to film screenings, our festival features live performances, parties, Q&A sessions and more.

For safety reasons, our 2021 festival will be held online, instead of at our usual location at Arts Court. In response to the financial difficulties experienced by many filmmakers as a result of COVID-19, we have also lowered our standard submission fees for our 2021 season.

Why should I submit to Mirror Mountain?

1. Free festival pass for all filmmakers who submit
Everyone who submits a film to Mirror Mountain, regardless of whether or not it is selected, gets a free pass to attend the entire festival.

2. Free to submit for local filmmakers
Films of any length can be submitted for free if they were shot and/or edited within a 125 km radius of Ottawa. This area includes Gatineau, Maniwaki, Mont Tremblant, Montebello, Hawkesbury, Cornwall, Potsdam, Brockville, Smiths Falls, Perth, Renfrew, Arnprior and more.

3. Free submissions for alumni
If you directed a film that was officially selected in a previous edition of Mirror Mountain, you can submit again at no cost.

4. Your money back
If your film is officially selected to screen in the festival, we’ll reimburse your original submission fee.

5. We pay artist fees
If your film is officially selected to screen in the festival, you will also receive a small fee to thank you for letting us screen your work.

6. Fewer restrictions
There are no premiere or date-of-completion requirements. Your film is eligible even if it has screened in the Ottawa region before. You are still eligible to submit if your film has distribution, has been broadcast on television, or is available to view online.

7. Stay in the loop
We will email you after you submit your film to confirm we’ve received your application. Later, you’ll receive a notification informing you of the results, regardless of whether or not your film was selected.

8. Awards for winning filmmakers
Awards are given out in several categories after the completion of the festival. Award winners receive a certificate and a selection of prizes donated by our sponsors.

9. Friendly and alternative atmosphere
Our festival usually takes place at Arts Court, downtown Ottawa’s hub for film, visual art, music, theatre and dance, and a meeting place for people from diverse artistic and cultural backgrounds.

The South African HorrorFest is the first (and only) event of its kind on the continent, bringing an exciting array of feature films and short films from around the world to the audience, who wouldn't get to see these indie productions in a cinema otherwise.

After the pandemic disaster the festival was moved on-line with selected screenings also in cinema. The on-line component actually served as a plus in that this expanded the scope to reach more viewers, not only in further flung areas of South Africa, but also the continent as a whole and the rest of the globe for some titles not geo-blocked, giving birth to the Global Horrorfest component of the event.

All movie mediums and styles are accepted, as long as it contains elements of Horror / Chiller / Terror / Monsters etc.
For instance, an animated Sci-Fi comedy with monsters will be accepted.
