At the heart of the festival is the intersection between gardens and cinematic storytelling, explored from a broad perspective that embraces fundamental cultural, political, social, and artistic values. The themes go beyond nature and landscape to include ecology, sustainability, education, culture, human rights, social engagement, and environmental awareness.
The Garden-in-Movies/ShortFilmFest International Short Film Competition is open to all works that, through cinematic language, highlight nature, the environment, landscape, ecology, and sustainability as key drivers of growth and cultural exchange. However, the "garden" is also seen as a metaphor for any place, context, dynamic, or relationship that fosters and nurtures essential cultural, political, social, and artistic values. IMDb-qualifying | In-person screenings | Barcelona, Spain
Born in Sweden in 2020, The North Film Festival (TNFF) was created with one goal in mind: to celebrate bold, independent cinema from around the world — and to connect the hearts of filmmakers and film lovers across borders.
Over the last four amazing years, TNFF has grown into a dynamic platform with both online and live editions, proudly supporting Swedish filmmakers while welcoming international voices. Our deep belief in the power of this project even led us to expand — giving birth to our sister festival, The North Film Festival – New York City, which has since become a huge success in the U.S.
But as many of you know, sustaining an in-person festival without consistent local funding in Sweden has been a challenge. So, while it was not an easy decision, we are making an exciting leap forward:
The North Film Festival is officially moving to Barcelona, Spain — and it’s going LIVE.
Thanks to new funding opportunities and a strong cultural partnership in Barcelona, the festival will now take place in one of Europe’s most creative and cinematic cities. Barcelona is a city that breathes film, art, and storytelling — and it's the perfect new home for the next chapter of TNFF.
