This is where we start, the dark side of movies, inspired by the legendary Pink Floyd’s album.
We start with the dark side, not visible to the naked eye, mysterious, obscure - a side with blurred boundaries and infinite nuances, where nothing is certain, precise, predetermined. Not visible rather than invisible, lying under the surface, or elsewhere, it’s something that can’t be simplified as it continuously alludes to deeper meanings. It’s the side of cinema that is never accommodating and always inquiring, making us question the meaning of what we see, listen, perceive.
If you look closely, you’ll see that there’s a dark side to everything. You find it in Brothers Grimm’s folk tales, in Fritz Lang’s fantastic and apocalyptic visions, in Stephen King’s archetypes of narrative fiction, in Stanley Kubrick’s unforgettable imagery, in Homer’s poems as in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings epic. From the Holy Scriptures to Game of Thrones, the dark side is the driving force behind every art form and Ravenna Nightmare Film Fest is its cinematographic icon.

With the name Illusive Eye the optical process by which animation occurs in our brain by generating movement from the illusion produced by the rapid exposure to images in sequence is evoked. Animation offers the construction of credible universes, capable of freeing us from the limits of immediate reality.

With the coming of current communication technologies, animation has gained even more ground than it had in Film, Didactics and Videogames. Now, with the internet and the power of cell phones, mobile applications and the interconnection of devices and institutions with the network, animation has become an essential part of the language of interaction between the user and the world.

This audiovisual language has extended its discursive horizons as far as the human imagination reaches, and technically its evolution has allowed it to overcome reality by opening a fantastic vortex that provides immersive experiences and high doses of empathy as well as tons of fans of all ages and throughout the world, developing any theme with great aesthetic contributions and various levels of depth.

In honor of this abyss of creativity and as an invitation to immerse ourselves in it, this meeting space has been created for creators, scholars and amateurs. Looking to show not only its strength in the current film narrative but the presence of other types of speeches built on this means of visual expression: GIFs, memes, stickers, emoticons, headers, symbols for social networks, interface elements, banners, promotions , and any type of element generated from the illusion of an eye.

The biggest Black Film Festival in Canada

IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE RULES. SEND ONLY FILMS THAT AS A SUBJECT ABOUT BLACK REALITIES OR WITH BLACK ACTOR AS MAIN CHARACTERS.

The goal of the Montreal International Black Film Festival (MIBFF) is to bring audiences the most beautiful and the most amazing new Black films, while creating a space to debate major cultural, social and socio-economic issues. The MIBFF wants to promote a different kind of cinema, cinema that hails from here and from abroad and that does not necessarily have the opportunity to grace the big screen, groundbreaking cinema that moves us, that raises awareness and that takes us all by surprise. The MIBFF wants to deal with issues and present works that raise questions, that provoke, that make us smile, that leave us perplexed, that shock us...

Mission

The MIBFF is a dynamic, innovative and audacious festival whose ambition is to promote the development of the independent film industry and to showcase more films on the realities of Blacks from around the world. It wants to take a fresh, new look at black cinema from the four corners of the globe!!!

Le FIFBM...

supports the creative process
The MIBFF is always on the lookout for new talent and is focused on serving as a springboard for the creative process. This is why it grants awards, gives workshops, and organizes debate conferences and networking events for all participating professionals.

diversifies the film offering in Canada
The MIBFF wants to diversify the film offering in Canada, thereby helping independent filmmakers conquer new audiences and giving the public access to a wider variety of quality works from both Canadian and foreign filmmakerss.

showcases independent films
The MIBFF aims to showcase independent films from Canada and abroad that deal with the realities of black people. By virtue of the quality of the films screened, the number of countries represented, its growing moviegoer base, the interest of the public and of the artistic community in the Festival, its international media coverage, its networking activities, its bilingualism (French and English) and its geographic position (Montreal), the MIBFF can boast being the largest festival in Canada dedicated entirely to screening films on the realities of blacks from the four corners of the globe.

holds activities all year long
The MIBFF wants to give the public access to Canadian and foreign filmmakers and their works all year long through film screenings, debates, round tables, workshops, etc., with an eye to facilitating the exchange of ideas, broadening people’s knowledge, bringing new films to the public and helping viewers get a better understanding of these films. The Festival also wants to help filmmakers conquer new audiences.

operates in French and in English
The MIBFF screens films and holds activities in the two official languages of Canada: English and French. Its documents, promotional and interpretative materials are also bilingual. However, in certain cases, some films are presented in either English or French only.

The San Pedro International Film Festival was founded to celebrate the diverse culture and community of San Pedro with a wide spectrum of independent film, documentaries, and shorts. SPIFF is committed to exhibiting films that embody inspiring entertainment for all. Works that express fresh voices and differing global perspectives, with the intent that these films enlighten audiences while providing invaluable exposure for filmmakers, local and international.

In our first year, we had the first Los Angeles screening of Silver Linings Playbook. In our second year we hosted Ernie LaPointe, Sitting Bull's Great Grandson. In 2015 we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of The Usual Suspects with director Bryan Singer. We also had two short films either win or be nominated for an Academy Award! In 2017 we hosted the 30th Anniversary of Friday the 13th with director Sean S. Cunningham. We are very excited about our seventh year!

Prolific American writer and poet Charles Bukowski called San Pedro home for 15 years. Some of DW Griffith’s early short films were shot in San Pedro. These days you’re more likely to find film crews for NCIS, Mad Men, and Dexter. Other films shot in San Pedro include ‘King Kong’, ‘Chinatown’, ‘Point Break’, ‘Silence of the Lambs’, ‘The Usual Suspects’, ‘Pearl Harbor’, ‘Titanic’, ‘500 Days of Summer’, and a ton more. SPIFF is thrilled to present our 5th edition in a city with such a rich film history.
