ABOUT SLAMDANCE

The Slamdance Film Festival is a showcase for raw and innovative filmmaking that lives and bleeds by its mantra: By Filmmakers, For Filmmakers. Slamdance has created a track record for showcasing breakthrough artists that is beyond dispute. Filmmakers who first presented their work at the festival are now amongst the biggest names in the entertainment industry. Alumni who have shown their early short films and debut features at Slamdance include Rian Johnson (Knives Out), Ari Aster (Midsommar), Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love and Basketball), The Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame), Bong Joon Ho (Parasite), Lena Dunham (Girls), Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians), Lynn Shelton (Little Fires Everywhere) and Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk).

"Of all the Sundance myths that developed over the last 35 years, the biggest fallacy is that of being magically discovered and launching one’s career on a snow-covered January evening in Park City. If anything, when that does happen, it’s across the street at Slamdance” - IndieWire

ABOUT PROGRAMMING

The Slamdance Film Festival accepts films in every genre, on any topic, from every country around the world. We spotlight low-budget Narrative and Documentary Features by first-time directors, Breakout Features from non-first time directors, short films across genres, and episodes. We do not disqualify any films based on premiere status or date of completion.

The festival program is selected entirely from our blind submissions pool and no films are given special treatment based on who made them or who they know. Over 200 Slamdance alumni filmmakers are responsible for the programming and organization of the festival. Comprised of a variety of backgrounds, interests, and talents, but with no individual filmmaker’s vote valued more than any other, Slamdance committees have been able to stay close to its original DIY spirit and continue to champion the bleeding-edge of contemporary filmmaking.

***

Even though it's hard to predict what shape the film festival circuit will take in 2021, Slamdance is committed to continuing to champion independent films in whatever way we can. We will be working on the new program as per our regular timeline and we’ll notify entrants about any event changes as we progress throughout the year. Possible changes include dates, location, and venue.
Whatever shape Slamdance 2021 may take, our priority stays the same: to provide selected filmmakers with a career launching platform, industry and media exposure and support of our alumni community.

We have signed The 2020 Festival Survival Pledge.

As always, we have no premiere or production timeline requirements. All films that have screened online as a part of a film festival are also eligible for consideration.

Our Filmfestival is the pioneering space, in the exhibition of experimental content in cinema, which seeks to show excellence and innovation in the independent production of the film world. Celebrate aesthetic diversity, new narratives, and new media and formats; a program that reveals the complexity of social, cultural and artistic phenomena. We understand "experimental cinema, like cinema that originates from the visual arts". A divergent cinema, that vanishes the boundaries with art, emphasizing the experimental modes of creation; enhancing the alternative creative processes that prefer beauty to business, language to industry, the aesthetic importance to the number of spectators and the formation of the public to the show.
We are open to new forms, new media, audiovisual formats, and avant-garde: experimental, video art, found footage, fiction, documentary, animation, and documentary.

We accept works with challenging and diverse content, but we do not support misogynistic, sexist, racist, classist and homophobic works in any of their forms.

The LA MIRADA TABÚ film festival wants to motivate artists and creators to show their view of the “taboo” concept, which is broad and diverse, encompassing from the dreams, the unconscious, the mental worlds and the ghosts that populate them , the mystery, the magic, even the untold reality, the unsaid, "the clothes hanging", in the workplace, emotional, family, vital ... from a vision as polyhedral as human thought is: casual, humorous, dramatic, dreamlike ... always from respect for all ways of thinking and from creativity.

LA MIRADA TABÚ launches an invitation to bring to light the personal and non-transferable world of each creator, which, as we have been able to verify throughout the history of art and cinema, through great names in world cinematography such as Luis Buñuel , Carlos Saura, Stanley Kubrick, Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni, David Lynch, Terrence Malick, Christopher Nolan, Julio Medem, Alejandro Amenábar ... connect with the deepest, most unknown and most ungraspable imaginary of viewers.

International Short Film Festival on elderly people (FICMA Salamanca)

Salamanca, Spain

The International Festival of Short Films on the Elderly (FICMA) was born within the Federation of Associations of the Elderly of Salamanca (FAMASA) with the aim of providing a cultural offer that contributes to improving the quality of life of the elderly by bringing them closer to a full citizenship and offering the cultural heritage of which they are protagonists. It is celebrated every year between September and October since 2016 in the city of Salamanca, being a meeting of intergenerational culture

The Festival poses as a place of debate and discourse for questions such as: How has cinema treated old age? How does it reflect the role of the elderly in the family, sentimental, emotional and social relationships, the process of deterioration and the proximity of death, in a society where the average age of the population is increasingly high? Does the influence of cinema negatively or positively affect the stereotypes and beliefs that society generates about the elderly and the elderly? Do you treat men in the same way as women?

The old age is heterogeneous, as much as older adults exist in the world and this is what aims to demonstrate this cinematographic event.

OBJECTIVES
The goal of FICMA is to get Salamanca people to come to the cinema from the perspective of people over 65 and / or with dependence. Thus, it is an excellent opportunity to offer a festival of cinema to the city and an active and positive vision of this sector of the population. The goal of the festival is for society to take a vision that highlights the positive aspects of old age and reinforces intergenerational relations.

Lucca Film Festival and Europa Cinema is an annual event that celebrates and promotes cinematographic culture. Through screenings, exhibitions, conferences and performances, the Festival has been able to captivate an ever-increasing audience with a program that ranges from experimental to mainstream films. Through the years, Lucca Film Festival and Europa Cinema has carved out a niche for itself, standing apart from the many other festivals thanks to its bold yet carefully studied programming. Over the years, great names of international filmmakers and well-known celebrities have attended Lucca Film Festival and Europa Cinema as invited guests; David Lynch, Oliver Stone, Jeremy Irons, Willem Dafoe, George Romero, Terry Gilliam, William Friedkin, Alfonso Cuarón, John Boorman and Peter Greenaway, Martin Freeman just to name a few. At the same time, the Festival has offered retrospectives of “old” glories while unearthing new talents. To top it all off, breathtaking Lucca and beautiful Viareggio serve as a stunning backdrop to an event that has now firmly established itself, becoming a highly anticipated and not-to-be-missed appointment in Italy and in Europe: the Lucca Film Festival and Europa Cinema.

The 2020 will be the 5th edition of the Lucca Film Festival and Europa Cinema International Feature Film Competition. In the previous editions important personalities of cinema like Cristi Puiu, Rutger Hauer and Philip Groening had been part of the international jury.

The films shown during this competition are Italian premieres and last edition was won by "Dollhouse: The Eradication of Female Subjectivity From American Popular Culture" by American filmmaker Nicole Brending.

The 2020 edition of Lucca Film Festival and Europa Cinema (because of the Covid-19) will be held from September 25 to October 4. The first call for entries has already been published and it is now possible to apply for the 2020 international feature competition.

Since its creation, the festival has always been committed to promoting contemporary films. Therefore, directors from all over the world can submit their films to the competitive section of the festival through the dedicated call for entries.

There are three categories: Best feature film prize (3000€), awarded by a jury of renowned guests from both the cinematographic and academic worlds, Best feature film – university jury prize (awarded by an university jury) and Best feature film – popular jury prize.
For those who are interested in this competition, the last day for submissions is August 10 2020, until midnight.

There are no limitations to the genre or topic of the films. The only requirements are the following: the films must be at least 60 minutes long and must have been produced in 2019. Moreover, they must be Italian premieres, so they cannot have been presented in any other Italian festival, shown on any online open platform or distributed in any other way in Italy.

For the 15th year in a row, it will take place the historic short films competition, whose winner will receive a 500€ prize. Every year, the selection committee of this competition receives more than 300 films to evaluate. Among the directors who took part in earlier editions, there are celebrities like Adan Jodorowsky, son of the famous Chilean filmmaker.
Even though the “free experimentation” is the fil rouge of this year's edition, the films have no limitations in genre and topic. The only requirement is that they cannot last more than 29 minutes. For the short films competition, the last day for submissions is August 10 2020, until midnight.

A list of the selected films will be published on the festival’s website before August 31 2020. During the festival the films will be shown in the cinemas taking part in the event.

Moreover, it has been reconfirmed the participation of the People's Jury and the University Students Jury for the feature competition.

The Lucca Film Festival and Europa Cinema, coordinated by Nicola Borrelli, is one of the key events organized and sponsored by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca.
The event's main sponsors are Banca Generali and Banca Pictet, whereas the exhibits are produced with the support of Banca Société Générale.
