We are organizing the first edition of the Majadahonda International Social Film Festival (MISFE’24), based on the conviction that cinema is a tool for social transformation, and by promoting the dissemination of critical and quality cinema, we can educate and sensitize the community about important social issues.
MISFE’24 not only promises to be a showcase for cinematic talent but also addresses and focuses on social issues of interest, as films can serve as educational and catalyzing tools for dialogue on relevant topics.
We want to help improve the development of Majadahonda and promote the enrichment of cultural offerings, as the diversity of films presented at the festival can enrich the cultural life of the community by exposing Majadahonda residents to diverse stories, perspectives, and artistic expressions.
We believe that cinema has the unique power to touch our emotions and awaken empathy. Therefore, celebrating this festival will provide us with the opportunity to connect on a deeper level with stories that reflect the diversity of our experiences and inspire us to understand and appreciate the richness of the human condition.
Through the short films participating in this first edition, we will explore and celebrate diversity in all its forms: cultural, social, racial, and more. By highlighting diverse narratives, the festival will promote inclusion and mutual understanding, building bridges between communities.
The selected films will not only be entertaining but also motivating. Through stories of overcoming, denunciation, activism, and positive change, the festival will serve to share ideas.
In 2025 the festival will take place in Rio de Janeiro and Niterói, and submissions are open for short and feature films on environmental issues, Human Rights and sustainability.
The festival shows annually the best recent films and videos on environmental issues, to create awareness, provoke debate and to widen knowledge and conscience on the need of urgent changes in the behavior of people, governments and companies, in order to preserve the planet.
All screenings are free of charge and some films might be screened online, with all security granted and geo-blocked to Brazil, if necessary.

Chhayanat is not just another film festival!
Since its inception, the Chhayanat Film and Theatre Festival at Jadavpur University has stood as a bastion of alternative cultural expression. Rooted in a profound commitment to challenge dominant narratives and advocating for social change, this festival has evolved into a vital platform for cinematic and theatrical exploration. Drawing inspiration from cinematic movements such as poetic realism, Italian neorealism, French New Wave, Surrealism and Iranian and world cinema, as well as the rich tradition of socially conscious theater, Chhayanat has become an abode for film lovers. It embraces an anti-fascist and anti-imperialist perspective. The influence of Italian Neorealism on Chhayanat is evident in the festival's selection of films that prioritize raw emotions, personal storytelling and stark portrayals of social injustice.
The impetus behind the formation of the Chhayanat Film Festival stems from a deep-seated desire to showcase films that not only entertain but also challenge and provoke thought. It is a celebration of cinema that transcends mere entertainment, delving into the realms of political and social commentary. From the works of directors who embody the spirit of resistance, such as Mrinal Sen and Ritwik Ghatak, to contemporary filmmakers like Jafar Panahi and Jean-Luc Godard, pushing the boundaries of storytelling, Chhayanat provides a platform for voices that often go unheard in mainstream cinema.
Moreover, the festival extends its embrace to theater, recognizing the inherent connection between the two art forms. Drawing from the revolutionary works of playwrights such as Bertolt Brecht, Federico García Lorca and Augusto Boal, Chhayanat underscores the importance of freedom of expression in theater. It pays homage to the legacy of figures like Shambhu Mitra, Utpal Dutt and Badal Sircar, who used theater as a tool for social change.
